A signifiant overhaul of the toll exemption system in national highways has been brought into consideration by the central government. The NHAI toll exemption list may get reduced, as a part of the changes that has been proposed. It may lead to potential end of toll free travel for categories of government vehicles. From the hight level committee, this proposal has been recommended, that has reviewed the existing exemption framework.
Between various stakeholder the discussion is still underway, according the reports. Talks has been going, where committee has been recommending to change the highway toll rules and gradually reducing the number of vehicles that will be eligible for using the toll road for free. The aim of these phased approach is to avoid any sudden disruptions while moving towards a more streamlined toll collection system.

Government Vehicles Could Be First To Lose Exemptions
According to the reports suggested, once this plan is approved, vehicles used by senior central and state government officer could be the first to lose their toll free benefits. The aim of this move is to reduce VIP culture and create a more uniform system for all highway users.
State authorities and departments have already been started to encouraged by government to use FASTag Annual Pass instead of seeking toll exemptions. This could simply help in improving transparency and operation of toll will also get simplified.
FASTag Annual Pass May Become The Preferred Option
As a practical alternative for frequent highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass has been emerged. One can opt for these prepaid plan which allows up 200 crossings and one year of travel, which ever is completed first.
The pass in recent time saw a small increase from the previous costing of Rs 3,000 and now costs Rs 3,075 per year. As a convenient solution these pass are getting promoted by the authorities. It reduces the need for special exemptions and smooth traveling across the national highway network will be achieved.
Current Toll Exemption Categories
In current situation, if any vehicle is carrying top government officers they do not have to pay toll fees on national highways. the vehicles of armed forces, defence personnel, paramilitary forces, executive magistrates, fire services, highway inspection team, and ambulance are exempted from paying tolls.
What The Proposal Means
There would be major policy shift if this proposal gets implemented. More government vehicles will pay toll charges, which will create a more standardised toll collection system. Though this proposal is still under discussion.
