In recent months, concerns related to E20 petrol, which contains ethanol around 20% has been raised. Many owner of the vehicles are questioning its impact on the life of the engine like, fuel efficiency, and insurance coverage. And now India’s two care makers from which one them is Toyota Kirloskar Motor and another one is Maruti Suzuki, they have clear shared an conveyed that their extensive data shows no evidence that E20 fuel can cause any unusual engine wear, corrosion or an increase in claims of the insurance.

According to NDTV Profit, both the companies senior executive have said that after years of vehicle servicing and testing have shown no harm of E20 petrol and it is safe for compatible vehicles. And they have also clear that it does not have any role in causing widespread mechanical problems, but yes it has let to small reduction in efficiency of fuel.

Maruti Suzuki Says Service Data Shows No Major Concerns

Senior Executive Officer, Rahul Bharti at Maruti Suzuki, said performance of the vehicle using E20 fuel has been closely monitored by the company, which includes manufactured models before 2010.

More than 2.5 crore vehicle during FY26 has been serviced by Maruti Suzuki, according to Bharti, which includes over 1.5 crore older generation cars. No unusual signs of premature engine wear, reduction of life of the engine, corrosion linked to E20 petrol has been found.

He also added no signs of any kind of issues has been shown by the vehicles that has been originally designed for E10 after using E20 fuel.

Bharti also responded to complaints raised by customers and answered some fuel related problems could actually be caused due to fuel adulteration rather than blending of ethanol. He also added that the companies of oil marketing regularly tests quality of fuel and work with manufacturers of automobile to maintain standards.

According to Maruti Suzuki, driver might also notice a small drop in mileage of their cars as ethanol has a lower energy content than petrol. Around 3 to 3.5% fuel efficiency could be reduced, according to company estimate, although actual mileage also depends on other factors such as traffic, driving habits and vehicle maintenance.

Toyota Supports Findings, Highlights Future Of Flex Fuel Vehicles

The country head and Executive Vice President at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Vikram Gulati said contamination is likely to be the reason if customer faces any fuel related issue rather than E20 blend. He also added a point that the fuel contamination has been an industry challenge even before E20 was introduced.

According to the estimate made by Toyota E20 petrol may lead to reduction in mileage around 3% to 4% because of energy density which is lower. Company also added that ethanol has a higher octane rating, which could also help in improving engine performance and support the development of more efficient engines in the future.

Toyota also believes in flex fuel vehicles, which is capable of running on multiple ethanol blends such as E20, E30, and E85, which could play an important role as India’s biofuel programme of biofuel expands. Both the automakers said, according to them all the current evidence supports the safe use of E20 fuel and urges people to not misled by such claims.
