After heavy rainfall, the newly inaugurated Delhi Dehradun Expressway suffered a road cave in near Shami, leading to concerns related to safety. According NHAI, the waterlogging is the cause of the damage, due to an incomplete drainage system. They have started to repair the damage.

Heavy Rain Damages Stretch Of Delhi Dehradun Expressway

The incident took place near Gogwan Jalalpur village. Videos shared on social media showed a depression on the road surface, with motorists pointing out the damaged stretch near Hathi Karoda village. The visuals quickly went viral, leading to concerns about road safety.

This Delhi Dehradun Expressway, was inaugurated on 14th April, this year, which stresses for more than 200 kilometer.

NHAI Says Waterlogging Caused The Cave In

According the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) the road did not collapse because of a structural failure but because of the water that got collected along the carriageway after heavy rainfall.

As reported by the authorities, to carry rainwater across the highway a culvert has already been built. And due to the injection from local residents the drainage was not able to get fully connected.

As reported by NHAI, the culvert opening had been used by the locals as a crossing for vehicles. And due to this the planned drainage system could not be functioned properly, which led rainwater to get clogged on the road and causing the surface to cave in.

Repair Work Already Completed

The damaged portion of the expressway has been repaired, according to the highway authority.

NHAI has started to build an interim parallel drainage system measuring around 1.5 kilometres, to avoid such similar incidents during the monsoon. The drainage gradient is also being redesigned to safety channel rainwater until the balancing culvert becomes operational.

To improve the water flow and to reduce the risk of water logging in the affected area, officials has takes these temporary measures.

About The Delhi Dehradun Expressway

The estimated cost of around Rs 12,000 crore, the Delhi Dehradun Expressway has built and it is one of the India’s major highway projects. The main aim is to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from 6.5 hours to around 2.5 to 3.0 hours.

The expressway has the speed limit up to 100 kmph and to connect several important routes. This route also includes the Delhi Mumbai, Delhi Katra, and Delhi Meerut expressways. It will also link with the other several upcoming projects such as the Gorakhpur Shamli Expressway and the Haridwar Spur.
