More than just display registration details are vehicle number plates in India. With the help of their colours, lettering styles and symbols clearly indicates the way the vehicles are being used and to whom it belongs to. Different categories have a specific format set by transport authorities, from private cars and taxis to diplomatic fleets and electric vehicles.
The most commonly plates that are seen are in white and yellow colour, but there several others that may people may not have seen or not noticed. Common Number Plates And What They Mean
Number plates which is white with black letter are sued for private vehicles such a cars, bikes, and scooters owned by individuals. These vehicles cannot be used for commercial purposes. On the other hand, number plates that are yellow with black text are for commercial vehicles like taxis, trucks and auto rickshaws.

Number plates that’s are green in colour are for electric vehicles, with whit letters for private EVs and yellow letters are for commercial EVs, making them easy to identify in the road.
Temporary number plates are mostly in red and issues to newly purchased vehicles before permanent registration. These are valid for a limited period. Number plates in blue colour and white text on it are used for diplomatic registration, it includes those vehicles operated by embassies and international organisations.

Special Categories And Unique Registrations
In India some number plates are reserved for special categories. Vehicles used by the Indian Armed Forces carry a very unique registration format with an upward arrow symbol instead of standard state codes used in generic number plates. These follow a operate military number system.
Red number plates which features the state Emblem of India instead of regular registration number are used by top constitutional authorities such as President, Vice President, and Governors. These plates signify official status and authority.
Another important series that has come is the BH (Bharat Series) number plate. It has been introduced to simplify vehicle ownership across states, this number plate allows individual with transferable job to move without re registering their vehicles every time they relocate.
